Hiroko Kamei obtained her graduate degrees at the University of Warwick; MSc in Mathematics, MSc and PhD in Mathematical Biology and Biophysical Chemistry. Her doctoral thesis was on synchrony-breaking bifurcation in coupled cell networks supervised by Prof. Ian Stewart. She started work as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Dundee on "Pharmacodynamics of anti-cancer drugs" with Dr Fordyce Davidson and Cyclacel Pharmaceuticals Inc. in 2009. She has been a lecturer (Teaching and Scholarship) in the Division of Mathematics at the University of Dundee since 2010.
